1. Genius Sports Acquires Legend for $1.2 Billion

Genius Sports (NYSE: GENI) completed a $1.2 billion all-in acquisition of Legend, an affiliate media and marketing technology company. The deal drew a negative market reaction with stock dropping 28% from $8.51 to $6.19. The acquisition represents approximately 10x Legend's trailing 12-month EBITDA – significantly higher than peers like Gambling.com which trade at 3x EBITDA.

Signals aggressive consolidation in sports betting data and affiliate marketing, though investors question the premium valuation.

2. New York Regulator Threatens Ban on Player Prop Bets

The NYSGC is reviewing all player proposition bets and same-game parlays, with potential elimination of certain wager types. Chair Brian O'Dwyer sent letters to over 70 sports leagues urging restrictions. Initial review found only 1 of 104 NFL player prop bets flagged as problematic.

As the largest legal U.S. sports betting market, New York's stance could trigger similar actions in other states.

3. Tennessee Orders Prediction Markets to Cease

Tennessee issued cease-and-desist letters to Kalshi, Polymarket, and Crypto.com, ordering them to halt sports event contract offerings. Non-compliance could result in penalties up to $25,000 per violation and criminal referrals.

Latest state-level challenge to federally regulated prediction markets, another sign of growing tension between federal and state regulation.

4. Brazil iGaming: Strong Start, Gaps Remain

At ICE Barcelona 2026, industry leaders assessed Brazil's first year of regulated gambling. The market met or exceeded expectations, with PIX payment system cited as a competitive advantage. Channelisation of players to regulated platforms remains ongoing.

Brazil is one of the world's largest newly regulated markets – its trajectory matters for LatAm expansion strategies.

5. Global Online Gambling Hits $101.45 Billion

Mordor Intelligence estimates the global online gambling market at $101.45B for 2026, projecting $168.71B by 2031 (10.72% CAGR). Sports betting leads at 52% market share. Mobile captured 53.65% of revenue. North America projected fastest growth at 15.40% CAGR.

Confirms mobile-first dominance and North America's growth acceleration potential.

6. UKGC: Prediction Markets = Gambling

The UK Gambling Commission formally stated prediction markets would fall within existing gambling law and require licensing. This follows increased scrutiny of Kalshi and Polymarket in the U.S.

Narrows regulatory arbitrage for prediction market operators seeking to avoid gambling licensing.
